Now: The north end of Polk Street has a more polished feel than the south. In many respects, it feels like an extension of Union Street: high end furnishings instead of hardware, and expensive Italian rather than cheap Indian.

Then: Part of the Polk Street commercial corridor since the city's earliest years, this section became more upscale through the 1980s and 1990s.

How To Get There: The 19-line Muni bus travels Polk Street (after crossing Market Street at Hyde Street near Civic Center). The north end runs directly into the Aquatic Park area of Fisherman's Wharf, and it's an easy walk up from there, or from the commercial sector of Union Street. It's also possible to walk (over a hill) or bus (41, 45) across Union Street from North Beach.
